Scenario: Your manager asks you to document the steps for opening the store each morning so new employees can reference it. *Write: "Turn on lights, unlock door, turn on computers, count register."Write a numbered list: "1. Arrive 15 minutes before opening. 2. Disarm security system (code: XXXX). 3. Turn on all lights and equipment. 4. Count register and verify opening balance. 5. Unlock front entrance at opening time."Write: "Get there early. Do the usual stuff - lights, computers, money, then open the door."

Scenario: You need to request next Friday off for a personal appointment. You're writing an email to your supervisor. *Write: "Need Friday off. Let me know."Write: "Can I have next Friday off? I have something I need to do."Write: "Hi [Supervisor's name], I would like to request Friday, [date] off for a personal appointment. I can arrange coverage with [coworker's name] if needed. Please let me know if this works. Thank you."

Scenario: During your shift, a customer approaches and asks where the restrooms are located. *Point in a general direction and say, "Over there."Make eye contact, smile, and say, "The restrooms are located at the back of the store, past the electronics section on your right."Say, "Um, I think they're in the back somewhere. You'll find them."

Scenario: You're in a team meeting and your manager asks for your input on a new scheduling system. *Stay silent because you're nervous about speaking in front of the group.Say, "I think the new system could work well. One suggestion—could we get training on it before it goes live?"Say, "I guess it's fine. Whatever everyone else thinks."

Scenario: A customer is frustrated because the item they want is out of stock. They ask when it will be available. *Say, "I don't know. You'll have to check back later."Say, "I understand that's frustrating. Let me check our system for you. I can also provide you with our customer service number to place an order for when it arrives."Say, "Yeah, we're out. Happens a lot with that item."

Scenario: You need to call in sick to work. You phone your supervisor two hours before your shift. *Say, "Hey, I'm not feeling well so I won't be coming in today."Say, "Good morning [Supervisor's name]. Scenario: A customer is explaining a problem with their order: it was the wrong size, arrived late, and the packaging was damaged. They want a refund. *After they mention "wrong size," you interrupt to start processing the return without hearing the rest.You listen to all three issues without interrupting, then say, "I understand—wrong size, late delivery, and damaged packaging. Let me process your refund and file a report about the shipping issue."You listen while also checking your phone for messages, then ask them to repeat what happened.

Scenario: Your manager gives you verbal feedback: "You're doing great with customer service, but I've noticed you're often 5-10 minutes late to your shift. Let's work on punctuality." *You focus only on the positive part and think, "Great, they said I'm doing well!"You listen to both parts of the feedback, thank them, and say, "You're right about my punctuality. I'll make sure to arrive 10 minutes early going forward."You immediately become defensive and think about excuses for why you've been late instead of really hearing the message.

Scenario: During a team huddle, your supervisor mentions three priorities for the day: restocking shelves, helping customers, and organizing the storage room. Throughout the day you should balance all three. *You remember "restocking shelves" and focus entirely on that, forgetting the other priorities.You mentally note all three tasks, periodically check in with yourself throughout the day to ensure you're balancing them.You remember there were multiple tasks mentioned but can't recall the specifics, so you ask a coworker what was said.

Scenario: A coworker is telling you about a personal challenge they're facing outside of work during your break. *Listen while thinking about what advice you'll give them, preparing your response in your head.Listen attentively, maintain eye contact, and respond with, "That sounds really difficult. How are you managing with everything?"Listen for a minute but then change the subject to something happening in your own life.
